Dear editor:
According to your Feb. 3 news article, Pakistan Daily Times editor Najam Sethi contends that "a degree of censorship is imposed" by the Western press with regard to the Holocaust. "People who question some of the facts of the Holocaust are ostracized," he asserts. "Most publishers are so sensitive they won't even get into the argument."
That's because the Holocaust is not an "argument"; it's a fact.
Those who "question" the Holocaust are not representatives of a legitimate alternative viewpoint. They are old-fashioned bigots wearing a new kind of sheet. In its report on antisemitism around the world last year, the U.S. State Department pointedly included instances of Holocaust-denial as examples of antisemitism. Likewise, United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan last month said, in his remarks on International Holocaust Commemoration Day, that "Holocaust denial is the work of bigots." Newspaper editors who decline to publish the writings of those bigots are not engaging in "censorship"; they are showing common sense and journalistic responsibility.
