To the editor:
It is certainly welcome news that the Saudi Arabian ambassador to the United States, Prince Turki al-Faisal, told the editors of the Post that he acknowledges the Holocaust "is a historical fact." (Post, Dec. 15) This represents a noteworthy departure from the Holocaust-denial that is routinely espoused by a number of Arab and Muslim leaders and regimes.
One critical question that remains to be answered is whether Ambassador al-Faisal's statements are merely for Western consumption, or will be reflected in the Saudi government-controlled media and school textbooks.
According to the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI), Saudi Arabia's Al-Ikhbariya TV, on November 13, 2005, aired an interview with a Saudi professor who said "The Holocaust is a myth with a certain political agenda." On the same day, the Saudis' Al-Majd TV broadcast an interview with a Jordanian theologian who sympathetically quoted French Holocaust-denier Roger Garoudy as saying, "If we take the number of gas chambers and the maximal daily capacity of an oven, and multiply them by the period you Zionists claim the Holocaust lasted--even if we multiply the number of ovens by the maximal [capacity], the figure is grossly exaggerated. The number of those burned was 600,000. You added another zero, and turned it into six million."
If the Saudi government-controlled media continue to spread such hateful messages, Ambassador al-Faisal's statement acknowledging the Holocaust will ring hollow.
